Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody

Synopsis – Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets…and secrets hide in every shadow.

Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.

Frightened and alone, Enne has only one lead: the name Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and a con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn’t have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne’s offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.

Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless Mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi’s enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…

And she’ll need to play -Goodreads

Wow, just wow. I read Daughter of the Burning City last year and just loved it. I didn’t have to think about buying Amanda Foody’s next book Ace of Shades, I just brought it.

I was not disappointed. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Levi and although I found Enne stuck up and slightly annoying at times I loved her character as well.

Enne is looking for her adopted mother in the city of sin. As soon as she is off the boat she is in trouble. When mentioning her mother’s name people become edgy around her. She is lead by 2 children to their den where she is introduced to Levi Glaisyer, a street lord of one of the most notorious gangs in the city.

Levi is charming in his own little way, but not to be messed with. He also has a secret which he keeps from his gang thats bad for business. He is the mafia’s favourite, which isn’t good. He sleeps in her personal apartments and all he has to do is whatever job she requires.

Everybody has a talent in this world, Enne is apparently dancing. It becomes obvious though that this was a lie told to her to protect her. Enne becomes very head strong and cunning, she evolves to adapt to The City of Sin. Levi leads her to his boss hoping that she would just be offered a job. Unfortunately its not the job he had hoped for Enne.

Along the way Levi is threatened by wealthy and dangerous men who he has conned out of vaults (money) These men see to it that Levi will have to play a game and not get out of this alive.

The ending is has left me with questions. Enne and Levi relationship, what will happen? Not to worry though, a second book will be out……. april 2019 😭

If you enjoyed Daughter if the Burning City I highly recommend this book.
